PureStep Compression Socks have a zip along the side and graduated compression of 15–20 mmHg. Open the zip, put your foot in, close it — no wrestling.
The hard part about compression socks is getting them on
A sock designed to apply pressure has to be tight. That's the entire point — and also why so many people buy a pair, struggle with them for three mornings, and then leave them in the drawer.
PureStep has a zip running down the side. You open it fully, slide your foot in without resistance, pull the sock up over the calf and close the zip. It takes seconds rather than minutes, and you don't need to bend deep or have strong hands.
That's the difference between a pair of compression socks you wear and a pair you own.
-
✓ Side zip
Goes on without a fight — even with stiff fingers or if bending down is difficult. -
✓ Graduated compression, 15–20 mmHg
Firmer at the ankle, gradually looser up the calf. -
✓ Open toe
Gives the toes room and makes it easier to check the fit. -
✓ Knee-high
Look like ordinary knee socks under trousers. -
✓ Black and beige
One, two or three pairs per order.
What graduated compression means
A compression sock isn't just a tight sock. The pressure is deliberately uneven: firmest around the ankle, then progressively looser towards the knee. That gradient is the whole point — it supports blood's route back up the leg rather than squeezing evenly across the calf.
15–20 mmHg is the lower of the common levels. Enough to notice through a long day, but loose enough that you'll actually keep them on from morning to evening.
⚠ Compression isn't right for everyone
Speak to a doctor before using compression socks if you:
- have or suspect reduced arterial circulation in the legs (claudication, cold or pale feet, wounds that won't heal)
- have diabetes with reduced sensation in the feet
- have heart failure
- have a skin infection, eczema, wounds or significant irritation on the leg
- have a known blood clot or have recently had surgery on the leg
Take the socks off immediately if you notice:
- numbness, tingling or pain
- the foot feeling cold or looking pale or bluish
- marks that don't fade after you take them off
Swelling in one leg only, sudden swelling, warmth or pain in the calf should always be assessed by a doctor — it can indicate a blood clot, and compression socks are not the right response.
When do they help?
- • Standing work — healthcare, retail, hospitality, hairdressing
- • Long flights and drives — hours in the same seated position
- • Desk days — when your legs feel heavy by the afternoon
- • When bending down is difficult — the zip makes dressing possible without help
- • Heavy-feeling legs — during the day, not overnight
How to measure for the right size
Size matters more here than with ordinary socks. Too large and you get no compression; too small and the sock constricts rather than supports. Measure in the morning before your legs have swollen:
- Measure the ankle circumference at its narrowest point, just above the ankle bone.
- Measure the calf circumference at its widest point.
- Measure the length from the floor to the back of the knee while sitting with the knee bent.
- Compare with the size chart — the ankle measurement carries the most weight.
Between two sizes at the ankle? Take the smaller so the compression is correct — but only if the calf measurement still fits. A zipped sock has less give than a standard one, so the calf figure has to be right.
Putting them on
- Put them on in the morning, before your legs have swollen — that's when they do most good.
- Open the zip fully and put your foot in. It should slide in without resistance.
- Position the heel correctly and pull the sock up over the calf.
- Smooth out any folds and close the zip from the bottom up.
- Check the cuff sits two fingers below the back of the knee.
Wear them through the day and take them off at night, unless a doctor has advised otherwise. Hold the fabric edge while pulling the zip so the seam doesn't take unnecessary strain.
Care
Close the zip before washing so it doesn't catch on the fabric. Wash at 40°C in a laundry bag. Don't use fabric softener, bleach or a tumble dryer — all three break down the elastane, and a compression sock that has lost its stretch does nothing. Dry flat. Compression fades with time; expect to replace them after some months of daily wear.

Frequently asked questions
Which size should I choose?
Measure your ankle circumference in the morning and compare with the size chart. The ankle measurement is the deciding one, since that's where compression is greatest. Then check the calf measurement fits the same size — a zipped sock has less give than a standard compression sock.
Can you feel the zip against your leg?
It lies flat along the side of the calf and is covered by trousers. If you feel it pressing, that usually means the calf measurement is at the limit for that size.
Why an open toe?
An open toe gives the toes room, keeps the sock cooler and makes it easy to check that the foot has normal colour and temperature. Many people also find it easier to get on.
Do they prevent blood clots on flights?
That isn't a claim we make for this product. If you're at increased risk of clots — previous clot, recent surgery, pregnancy or a known clotting disorder — speak to a doctor before a long journey rather than relying on a support sock.
Can I sleep in them?
No, unless a doctor has told you to. Lying down, your legs don't need compression in the same way, and the sock can bunch up and constrict a small area.
Why do they roll down?
Almost always because the calf measurement is too small for the size, or because the sock has been pulled up too far so the cuff sits in the back of the knee. The cuff should sit two fingers below the crease of the knee.
How long does the compression last?
Elasticity fades with wear and washing. If the sock feels noticeably looser than when it was new, it's no longer doing the same job. Two pairs alternated last longer than one pair worn daily.
PureStep are support socks with graduated compression intended for everyday wear. They are not a medical device, do not treat venous disease, varicose veins, oedema or blood clots, and do not replace medical assessment or prescribed compression therapy. In the event of swelling in one leg, sudden swelling, pain or wounds, consult a doctor. Keep out of reach of children.
