HairLess IPL Hair Removal delivers permanent hair reduction at home. Five intensity levels, 500,000 light pulses and a treatment schedule of 8–12 weeks.

Work out what shaving costs you

Five minutes in the shower, twice a week. Razors to replace. Stubble after two days, razor bumps along the bikini line, and ingrown hairs that turn into red spots.

Over a year that's roughly twenty hours in the shower. Over ten years it's a full working week spent shaving, plus the cost of the blades.

IPL replaces that with eight to twelve fifteen-minute sessions, then a few maintenance treatments a year.

How the technology works

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. The light is absorbed by melanin — the pigment — in the hair shaft, converts to heat and reaches the follicle, which then enters a dormant phase.

Multiple sessions are needed because of hair growth cycles. Only some hairs are in the active growth phase at any given time, and only those are affected. That's why you treat weekly for eight to twelve weeks — to catch every hair while it's in the right phase.

The result is called permanent hair reduction, not hair removal. Hairs become fewer, finer and lighter, and most people go from shaving twice a week to a maintenance session a few times a year. If you want every follicle gone for good, electrolysis is the only method that does that.

Will it work for you?

This is the most important question to settle before buying, and it comes down to the contrast between your skin and your hair.

Your combination Result
Light skin, dark hair Best conditions. The greatest contrast between skin and hair.
Medium skin, dark hair Works well. Start on a lower intensity.
Dark or very dark skin Not recommended. Skin absorbs too much energy — risk of burns and pigment changes.
White, grey or red hair Doesn't work. There's no melanin for the light to target.
Very light blonde hair Weak results, for the same reason.

This isn't a limitation of this particular device — it applies to all IPL technology, at any price. If you read the same on a salon's website, it's for exactly the same reason.

What to do

  1. Shave the area first. The light needs to reach the follicle beneath the skin, not burn in the hair above it. Never wax or epilate beforehand — that leaves no root to treat.
  2. Patch-test a small area and wait a day before treating a whole region for the first time.
  3. Dry the skin and make sure it's clean and free of cream or deodorant.
  4. Start on the lowest level and only increase if it feels comfortable.
  5. Hold the device at 90 degrees to the skin and flash section by section without overlapping.
  6. Once a week for 8–12 weeks, then maintenance as needed.

Avoid sun on treated areas during and after the course, and use sun protection. Tanned skin holds more melanin and tolerates treatment less well.

Never near the eyes

IPL flashes can damage the retina. Never use the device on eyebrows, eyelids or the area around the eyes, and don't look into the light. Treat the face only below the cheekbones.

Nor should it be used on mucous membranes or inside the intimate area — the bikini line yes, internally no.

Don't use it if

You're pregnant or breastfeeding, have dark skin, are sunburnt or recently tanned, or take photosensitising medication — certain antibiotics, isotretinoin and St John's wort are examples. Ask a pharmacist or doctor if you're unsure about your medication.

Don't treat over tattoos, permanent make-up, moles, dark spots, wounds, active acne, eczema or recently treated skin. If you have epilepsy, a skin condition, or are undergoing treatment for skin cancer, check with a doctor first.

Frequently asked questions

What does it feel like?

Like a brief pulse of warmth or a small snap against the skin — most people compare it to a rubber band flicking lightly. It's considerably milder than waxing, but "painless" overstates it. On sensitive areas and higher levels you'll notice it more.

Do I have to shave first?

Yes, always. The light needs to reach the follicle beneath the skin — if hair sits above it, the energy burns there instead, which both hurts and gives poorer results. Never wax or epilate beforehand, though, since that removes the root.

Why 8–12 weeks specifically?

Hair grows in cycles, and only hairs in the active growth phase respond to treatment. Treating weekly across that period catches every hair while it's in the right phase. Many people see a difference after three or four weeks.

Will I be completely hair-free forever?

No — the accurate term is hair reduction. Hairs become considerably fewer, finer and lighter, and most people need only a maintenance session a few times a year. If you want every follicle permanently gone, electrolysis is the only method.

Can I use it on my face?

Below the cheekbones — upper lip, chin and jawline. Never on eyebrows, eyelids or around the eyes, since IPL light can damage the retina.

Is 500,000 flashes enough?

With plenty to spare. A full treatment of both legs takes roughly 600 flashes, so that count covers the whole body for years — and there's no cartridge to buy.

HairLess IPL is a home-use device intended for permanent hair reduction. It is not a medical device and does not treat skin conditions or other medical conditions. Never use it on or near the eyes, on mucous membranes, or over tattoos, moles or dark spots. Not suitable with dark skin tones, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, on sunburnt skin, while taking photosensitising medication, or with epilepsy. Patch-test a small area before your first treatment. In the event of burns, blisters, persistent redness or pigment changes, stop using it and consult a doctor. Read the instruction manual before use. Keep out of reach of children.
