Oily roots, dry ends
Same hair, same day, same shampoo. Yet the scalp feels greasy after two days while the ends get rougher with every passing month.
The explanation is simple once you hear it: the scalp produces sebum at the root, and sebum is hair's own conditioner. But it never travels more than a few centimetres on its own. On long hair it barely gets past your ears.
The result is hair with too much oil in one place and too little in another — and two products bought to solve both problems.
Why boar bristle specifically
Boar bristle is made of keratin — exactly the same protein as your hair. That similarity is the whole point: the bristle picks up sebum from the scalp and draws it down the shaft, rather like a hair-shaped comb with the right surface texture.
It's why hairdressers have used boar bristle for over a century, and why a plastic brush doesn't do the same thing however handsome it looks. Plastic has the wrong surface properties to carry oil.
You see the effect immediately. Hair gains a smoother surface that reflects light more evenly — what we perceive as shine — and the ends feel softer because they're finally getting something they never got before.

A brush with boar bristle alone won't get through thick or curly hair — the bristle is too short and dense. The mix isn't a compromise, then; it's what makes the brush usable on real hair.

How to brush
- Brush dry hair. Wet hair is at its weakest and tolerates brushing less well — use a wide-tooth comb instead.
- Start at the ends and work upwards in sections. Starting from the top just compacts the tangles.
- Then set the brush at the scalp and draw all the way through. That's the stroke that carries the sebum down.
- Take fifteen to twenty strokes in the evening. More isn't necessary.
- Clean the brush by pulling the hair out with a comb once a week.
Evening brushing gives the most — the sebum has the whole night to distribute, and you wake up with softer lengths.
Will it suit your hair?
Straight to wavy hair, mid-length or longer: this is where the brush earns its keep. The longer the hair, the further the sebum has to travel.
Fine hair: works, but use fewer strokes. Fine hair is easily weighed down if the lengths get too much oil.
Curly and coily hair: brushing breaks up the curl pattern. If you have defined curls, a wide-tooth comb on wet hair is a better choice — or use the brush only before washing.
Worth knowing
This brush contains genuine boar bristle, which is an animal-derived material. If you're looking for a vegan brush, this isn't the right choice.
New boar bristle can have a faint smell the first few times, especially if it gets damp. It fades. Never leave the brush wet — dry it bristle-side down.

Frequently asked questions
Won't drawing the oil down make my hair greasy?
The sebum is moved from the scalp, not added. Many people find the opposite — roots stay fresh longer because the oil isn't collecting there. With fine hair, use fewer strokes and see how it responds.
Can I brush wet hair?
Avoid it. The hair shaft is at its weakest when wet, and a dense brush pulls at it more. Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair and save the brush for once it's dry.
Why both boar bristle and nylon?
They do different jobs. The nylon pins are longer and reach the scalp even through thick hair; the boar bristle is shorter and denser and distributes the sebum. A pure boar brush simply won't get through thick hair.
Is it vegan?
No. Boar bristle is animal-derived. If you want a vegan alternative, choose a brush with synthetic bristle only — though it won't distribute sebum in the same way.
Does it work on curly hair?
Brushing breaks up the curl pattern, so with defined curls it's better used before washing than on styled hair. On wavy hair it works well.
How do I clean it?
Pull the hair out with a comb once a week. If it needs washing, use a few drops of shampoo in lukewarm water, rinse, and dry it bristle-side down so the rubber cushion doesn't hold water.
