Ortheva is a hinged big-toe splint that holds the big toe in a straighter position while worn and helps reduce pressure over the bunion area. The hinge at the big-toe joint allows the foot to bend as you move.
Left and right versions are sold separately. Several adjustable straps let you fine-tune the fit and begin with a gentler corrective pull.
Why the splint is designed this way
The rigid side section provides support along the inside of the foot, while the hinge sits over the big-toe joint to allow movement. Soft padding sits against the bunion area to reduce direct pressure from the splint itself.

How to choose the correct side
The splint is foot-specific because it is designed to sit along the inside of the foot. Choose the left model for the left foot and the right model for the right foot. If both feet are affected, you will need one of each.

How to use it
- Place your foot in the splint so the hinge sits directly over the big-toe joint.
- Fasten the ankle strap, followed by the strap over the forefoot.
- Adjust the strap over the big toe until you feel a light, even pull.
- Start with around 20–30 minutes and gradually increase wear time if it feels comfortable.
You should feel a gentle stretching sensation, not pain. Loosen the splint immediately if the toe becomes numb, cold, discoloured or increasingly painful.
Care
Wipe clean with a damp cloth and mild soap and allow to air dry. Do not machine wash the splint. Keep the hook-and-loop surfaces free of lint and avoid tumble drying, radiators and direct heat.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wear shoes with it?
It may fit inside roomy shoes with plenty of space across the forefoot. In narrow or close-fitting shoes, the splint may take up too much room. Many people therefore use it mainly at home, in the evening or while resting.
Will it permanently straighten the toe?
No. The splint holds the big toe in a straighter position while it is being worn, but it does not permanently change the bone structure or remove an existing bunion.
How long should I wear it?
Start with 20–30 minutes and increase gradually if your foot feels comfortable. The splint should not cause numbness, coldness or sharp pain.
Should it hurt?
No. A light stretching sensation can be normal, but sharp pain, numbness, discolouration or coldness in the toe means the splint is too tight or needs to be adjusted.
Can I sleep while wearing it?
It may be suitable for some people after a gradual adjustment period. Try shorter sessions first and make sure the fit remains comfortable before wearing it for longer periods.
How do I choose left or right?
The splint should sit along the inside of the foot. Choose the left model for problems affecting the left foot and the right model for the right foot.
Good to know
The splint provides support and pressure relief while it is worn, but it does not treat the underlying cause of hallux valgus. Significant deformity, persistent pain or recurring skin problems should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
